Notes:

[Source: Sue Ellen Matthews Fealko]

"First, Minerva was not born in Alabama. She was the sixth child of Francis and Mary (McDaniel) Matthews, who lived right in Gwinnett County from before 1830. According to the family record we have of Rev. Noah H. Matthews (1852-1914), Minerva was born April 2,1833. You can see her name with her mother (her father died in 1842) in the 1850 (hh #676), 1860 (hh #1446), and 1870 (hh #508) censuses of Gwinnett County."

"Second, Norcross is in Gwinnett County, not DeKalb (it痴 correct earlier in your website). Still, there is no "Harmony Methodist Cemetery" of Norcross listed in Alice McCabe痴 book Gwinnett County Deaths 1818-1989. Are you sure this is the correct name? I would imagine that any church cemetery would have been included in this comprehensive book."

[Ed. Note: Re: "Harmony Methodist Cemetery" That is the cemetery name given to me by Mrs. Annette (Haney) Nichols back in the mid-1980's when she first began researching her family. Evidently this was what was told her by older family members, and may be the name they always called the burial place of their members. It may well go by a different name today and needs further investigation. I have a 3" ring-binder notebook filled with letters from Annette as she expanded her research that preceeds her establishing her own internet web page.]

It then served under Generals Mackall, Cantey, and Featherston in the Army of Tennessee. The 37th fought in the Atlanta Campaign, endured Hood's winter operations in Tennessee, and ended the war in North Carolina. It reported 5 killed and 27 wounded of the 453 engaged at Iuka , had 19 killed and 62 wounded at Corinth, and sustained 81 casualties at Hatchie's Bridge. Many were disabled in Tennessee, and early in 1865 its ten companies were reduced to three and the unit was redesignated the 37th Battalion. It surrendered in April. "Virginia,

Thank you very much for your generous help.

The only solid information I have is from Lauderdale County probate records. Probate Book "C", 1849 March Term. Estate of Jacob Gilmore. It identifies the heirs and one of the heirs was Samuel Waits and his guardian was Levi Waits. This sounds to me like the mother of Samuel, which was Elizabeth Gilmore, had died and her husband Levi was guardian to receive the estate share. Elizabeth Gilmore was born about 1814 in NC. Maybe I am reading too much into this and "Levi" was not the husband.

In 1870 Lauderdale, a Samuel Waits is listed with his wife Louise. I have nothing further on them. It also doesn't appear that Samuel showed up for his share in the estate. It took several years to settle in spite of it being fairly modest. I'll have to dig out my files to see if I can determine how the marriage connection between Levi and Elizabeth Gilmore came about. It was a long time ago and before I paid a lot of attention to valid sources, much to my shame today.

Charles C. [dixie24@earthlink.net]"

4 Jan 2004:

"Virginia,

I forgot to mention... From your email Elizabeth said she was married to James Waits in Belleville, Conecuh Co., Ala. Jacob Gilmore was also from Belleville, Conecuh Co., Ala. That is also were Elizabeth Gilmore reportedly married "Mr. Waits".

In 1850 and 1860 Coosa Co., Ala. there was a Levi Waits but I had previously determined he probably was not the person I was looking for. May have to revisit that.

I guess what I have to do is find young Samuel Waits in 1850. Charles"

"Charles: Joseph Waits was a full brother to the John C. Waits who md. Martha "Patsey" Warbington, and a half-brother to the James Waits whose wife was Martha's half-sister, Elizabeth "Betsey" Warbington. Joseph Waits (b. ca. 1787, d. bef. 1830) md. 19 Sep 1812 in Jasper Co., GA (1) Milly Mathews (b. bet. 1790-1800, d. bef. 1820) by whom he had 4 sons: Allen J. (b. ca. 1814 GA), William (b. ca. 1814 GA) and two as yet unidentified. He md. abt 1821 in Conecuh Co., AL (2) (_______), by who he had 5 children: an unidentified dau. (b. ca. 1823 AL), James (b. ca. 1826 AL), Calvin (b. ca. 1826 AL), unidentified son (b. ca. 1828 AL), & Martha (b. ca. 1831). [Note: Milly's two youngest sons were born (bet. 1814-1818) within a time span comparable to your Elizabeth's.]

John C. & "Patsey" Waits' 2nd son was Levi Waits, Sr. (b. ca. 1813 GA, d. bef. 1880) who md. a Nancy (_______) by whom he had Samuel (b. ca. 1840), James (b. ca. 1844), Nancy (b. ca. 1846), Levi (b. ca. 1848), Martha (b. ca. 1851), Horatio (b. ca. 1854) & John R. (b. ca. 1856). This may be where your elusive Levi Waits fits-----IF his 2nd wife was "Nancy" Elizabeth Gilmore and IF Jacob Gilmore wrote his will before Samuel's younger siblings were born.

I mentioned to you in an earlier E-mail that there were three unidentifed older male siblings to John C. Waits (and his brother Joseph), and sugested that the younger of the three may have been your Elizabeth Gilmore's elusive (husband?) "Levi Waits." But, I now think they might not be, since you said Elizabeth md. her "Mr. Waits" ca. 1836 in Conecuh Co., AL. This older Levi Waits would have been b. ca. 1783, meaning he would have been about 53 yrs. old to her 22-24 yrs old----while still isn't entirely out of the question, I'm more inclined to think she married a man closer to her own age.

On August 23, 1860, their farm was listed as hh # 609-609, Dark Corner Beat, Holmes County, Mississippi. He has personal property valued at $4,530. He is a thirty-eight years old farmer; "Arminda" is twenty-eight years old. There are no children in their home.

"Horatio Waits md. Amanda Hamilton, d/o John Hamilton and his wife, Sarah McGraw Hamilton. Sarah's parents were Nathan McGraw (born 1766 in Fairfield Dist., SC) and Phoebe Jones, born in Fairfield Dist., SC, d/o Ralph Jones and his wife, Mary of Fairfield Dist., SC. My husband descends from Sarah's sister, Catherine, who was born in 1803 married in 1819 Amite Co., Ms. to Jacob Gibson, who also was from Fairfield Dist., SC. Do you know if Amanda and Horatio had children? I have bible records of Nathan and Phoebe."

"No, I don't know if Horatio and Amanda had any children. I do know that in both their 1850 and 1860 Holmes Co., MS censuses, they had no children.

I note the McGraw connection. Can you tell me more? My ancestor, Peter Starnes, died in Fairfield Co., SC in 1791. His second wife, Margaret, widow of Arthur Parr/Pharr, is reputed to have been a McGraw. One of her daughters, Esther (dau. of Arthur), married a McGraw, given name unknown. Then one of Peter's daughters by his first wife, Hannah Stimson, is reputed to have married an Edward McGraw, Jr...."

"Blows me out of the water....Peter Stearnes/Starnes came to SC from Va. to SC and is one of the early members of the church called "Gibson's Meeting House". I did not know his wife, Margaret was reputed to be a McGraw. I did know she md. 1st to Arthur Parr, and her daughter(s) md. McGraw - A Solomon McGraw was also one of the earliest members of the church and likely an ancestor of Nathan McGraw, the father of Sarah McGraw Hamilton, and grandfather of Amanda Hamilton Waits, w/o Horatio. I have lots of this Stearn information from working with a still existing McGraw group-but we rather "played out" the records extant on the McGraw's in Fairfield Dist., SC. Also, Rev. Jacob Gibson, the pastor of Gibson's Meeting House, was grandfather of Jacob Gibson who md. Sarah McGraw Hamilton's sister, Catherine McGraw. There is a Peter Stearns also in early Amite Co., Ms. /Pike Co., Ms. records so a desc. of the early Peter. We have information to share. Contact me. Also, what is your interest in Horatio Waits and Amanda Hamilton? It is told by Joel G. Hamilton (probably Joel Gibson Hamilton) that his Hamilton forefather also was of Fairfield Dist., SC. Joel was the only brother of Amanda. Do you know the names of other siblings? I have the will of both John and Sarah McGraw Hamilton also...and of most of Gibsons, some Stearns, many McGraw's as I have been to Fairfield Co., SC to research several times."

"The Peter Starnes in Amite Co., MS is undoubtly the son of Peter and Margaret (McGraw?-Parr) Starnes. I have a Starnes Family Memorial written in 1835 by Dr. Samuel Scott Starnes (and added to in 1855 by his brother, John Starnes) that says that old Peter's sons "went to Mississippi." Amite Co., MS just happens to be where the old Peter's grandson, Moses Starnes (son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth Callaham/Callahan Starnes) first settled after leaving GA.

Before Peter Stearns/Starnes became a member of Gibson's Meeting House, he and his first wife (and cousin), Hannah Stimson/Stinson, were among the sixteen charter members of the Sandy Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Sandy Creek, NC, founded in 1755 under the leadership of Peter's brother, Rev. Shubael Stearns. Most of these sixteen were all related by either blood or by marriage to Rev. Stearns.

My interest in Horatio Waits is that he is descended from my husband's Warbington family line......"

"Jasper Riley Waits lived in east Texas, near the Louisiana border. He cut timber for the sawmills and hued out cross ties for the railroads.

The parents of Jasper Riley Waits were William and Mary Waits who had six children born before Jasper. Two years after Jasper's birth, his mother passed away. William had lost a leg, believed from above the knee. As a consequence of his infirmary and his wife's death, Jasper was raised by several families in the area.

Jasper told his son, "T" Waits several stories about his grandfather, Bolin Waits, who was commonly called "Boley."

"In those days, there days there was a 'Bully' of each county. The way a may became the county 'Bully' occurred when 'battles' were held in the county. The winner became the 'County Bully.'

"Boley Waits was the bully of the county he lived in. On occasion, bullys from other counties came to fight. Early one morning a bully from another county came to Boley's home to challenge him to a fight just as he sat down to eat breakfast. The challenger seemed to be in a hurry by wanting to get on with the fight. Boley told the man that he always had his breakfast before he started his day. After he finished eating, Boley got his coat and gun. The went down aways from the house for the fight. The visiting bully had brought a second with him. As soon as the party got to the fighting ground, both the second and the contender wanted to start fighting right off. Boley told them to wait awhile. He set his gun down and pulled off his coat. Then Boley Waits told the visiting bully he was ready. After the fighting began, Boley found the contender to not be following the rules. So Boley began to fight dirty, too. T. Waits was told that Boley pulled both of the eye balls out of their sockets while the second was hollering "Don't kill him, Boley."

"In those days, a man always wanted the better dog. Dog fighting was a regular occurance, often occuring with few spectators around. Word of mouth news would convey the message that a fight was desired and the parties would meet at one or the other's farm for the fight."

"On this occasion, Boley had taken his dog to a neighbor's farm for a dog fight. After the dogs were turned loose, Boley's dog began to win. The farmer's wife saw this, ran down off the porch and kicked Boley's dog. Boley grabbed up an 8 or 10 inch sweep to throw at her. The wind was blowing so that the wife's long hair was trailing out behind her as she ran back to the porch. In his throw of the sweep, Boley missed the wife. However, the sweep caught in the wife's hair and almost knocked her down. Her husband, knowing that her kick had been unfair, didn't protest Boley's throwing of the sweep."

"T. Waits left 25 Oct 1935 for the Civilian Conservation Corp camp located near Wolf City, Texas about seventeen miles north of Greenville. Shortly after he left home, his Uncle Frank Waits came to his father's house in ill health. Here eight miles of Caddo Mills, he died the following February 22nd. Cold weather (and snow?) prevented T. from going to the funeral."

He married Cynthia Alexander, daughter of Mathew Alexander & Beeda ________, 6 Aug 1840 in Marion, Lauderdale County, Mississippi. Born About 1816 in Wayne County, Mississippi. Died About 1875 in Franklin County, Texas.

"The information I have regarding Alexander/Waits line is as follows: Bolden Green Waits b. 1817 GA (1870 Titus Co. TX census) married 1840, Lauderdale Co. MS (Lauderdale Co. After Matthew's death, Elizabeth married Bolden and Cynthia's son John Waits and they had several more children, one of which was my great-grandmother Leesey.)

"Thank you for the information. I am getting some information for you according to what my father told his family. The reason Eleanor was living in the Armstrong home is that H. Armstrong and Mary were elderly and they had a daughter Emily who was listed as "idiotic" on the census rolls. Eleanor lived there to help with Emily. On the previous census rolls in that family were H. his wife Mary, Walton, Joshua and Emily. I haven't been able to find what happened to Joshua or Emily. According to my father Walton & Eleanor married (I was told when I sent for records that the courthouse had burned with the records). Walton left shortly after my father was born and it was said he went to Indian Territory for some purpose but never returned, he was not a traveling salesman from Texas. He was living in Alabama and a farmer with his family when in his twenties. My father did live in the Warbington uncle's home. He never talked about that particular Warbington family nor were we permitted to ask questions. However, he was close to Hamie and Cousin Violet Alexander. I just need to get back on task to do more research.

I was in Alabama June 1st and visited the cemetery of the Warbingtons and the ones who were in the Civil War. Had a nice visit with Jo (Harwell) Beard. She didn't remember where she got the idea my daddy was a traveling salesman but admits it doesn't connect. I will get other info and send it to you and maybe you can connect all this. So good to talk to you, Mary"

Henderson, Gideon B. - Lewis, Mary Ann - 14 May 1841, Henry Brannum, M. G. officiating.

They are located in hh # 214-222 of the Lauderdale County, Mississippi Census, recorded on August 28, 1850, right next door (hh # 215-223) to Mary's parents, John Sr. & Winnaford Lewis. Gideon had no real estate value listed, while John's was valued at $600, which might indicate he was living on land owned by his father-in-law. Children in the home are: eight years old William D., six years old James T., five years old Mary E., and seven months old John.

"Hi Virginia,

I have a question about the accuracy of Gideon Henderson's birth year, as shown in the 1850 Laud. Co, MS, census. He is listed as age 51; however, he is not head of household in Washington County, AL, in 1830 or Lauderdale County, MS, in 1840. He only appears on the Lauderdale County Tax list in 1848 for the first time. In 1830 William Henderson, Sr. had an unidentified male between the ages of 10 and 15 in his household in AL. In Lauderdale County in 1840 he had an unidentified 20+ year old male in his household. William Henderson, Sr.'s other sons are accounted for on both the 1830 and 1840. In 1850 Gideon is head of his own household, but he doesn't appear on the 1860 or 1870 Lauderdale County census. In 1880 Gideon and family are found in Callahan, TX. But Gideon's age is listed as 60, which would put his birth year at 1820 or 1821, rather than 1799. Which census has his correct age and which is in error? I think the 1880 is correct, and Gideon was born 1820. This makes more sense when you consider the other census information and the tax roll. What do you think about this, Virginia? "Milam County, Texas: Gleanings from the Cameron Herald - Thur., 26 March 1903

Double Suicide - "Sam H. Worbington and D. E. Barmore Die Together by the use of Chloroform - Barmore is Dead and Buried, While no hope is held out for Worbington" - D. E. Barmore is dead and Sam H. Worbington is at death's door from the effect of overdose of morphine. Last evening about 7 p.m. Barmore walked into a saloon and informed the inmates that he had taken the drug. No one believed him or paid much attention as he had been drinking but after a while it was noticed that he was overcome. A physician was sent for and everything possible was done but he died this morning at 2 a.m. It is supposed that Worbington took his dose about the same time Barmore died. It is understood they had entered into an agreement to take the fatal dose together. Barmore came to this county with his parents in his early boyhood and had served one term as Justice of the Peace and was reelected but resigned a short time ago. He was a son of the late Dr. Barmore. Worbington came to this town from Louisiana he owned a saloon and café that was destroyed by fire. Both men had been in the barber business here for years. Mr. Worbington is still alive but with no hope for recovery. Barmore was buried at 4 p.m. today (at the Milano Cemetery). Both men left letters. [very lengthy article] "

"Hi Virginia,

Andrew J. Warbington was wounded at the Battle of Jonesboro. He suffered a gun shot wound and was admitted to a hospital in Macon, Georgia on 9/8/1864. He had his right arm amputated at the shoulder. There is a certificate of disability for retiring invalid soldiers in his papers. It says he enlisted on 2/27/1862 at Okalona, MS. That he was born in Lauderdale Co., MS. He is 5 feet, 6 inches high, has light hair, gray eyes, and a fair complexion. His application for disability was approved.

W.V. Warbington was detached from his unit and worked as a teamster on Capt. Head's supply train.

Hubbard Warbington was dangerously wounded with a head fracture at Murfreesboro on 12/31/1862 and sent to Atlanta Hospital. He was furloughed from there to Marion Station Hospital on 3/1/1863. All of the Warbington's mentioned here appear to have enlisted together on 2/27/1862.

Hope this helps some on the fate of the Warbington men. If you would like copies of these papers I would be glad to send them to you. I will be back in Meridian the first week in October, if there is anything you would like for me to lookup I would be glad to. I love the look of the new Warbington site. Talk to you later, Donna"

"Hello Virginia,

My name is Donna Culpepper. I am a descendant of Samuel B. Warbington through his daughter Rosa. I have some information I would like to share. I thought the site might like to know that Samuel's wife's maiden name was Martha Melissa Taylor. I have this from my great grandmother's death certificate. I have information on Samuel B. and Martha Melissa's descendants but I wasn't sure how to submit it. Also, I wondered if the Warbington family has a family newsletter? Thank you for a wonderful site. I have used it many times. Thank you, Donna"

"Hi Virginia,

Nice to hear from you so soon. I have been worrying the question of Martha Melissa Taylor and the mysterious Elizabeth Taylor for quite awhile now. I descend from Martha and my husband descends from Elizabeth's daughter Amanda Adeline Taylor. So you can see it is quite a puzzle for me. Let me answer your first question first. Rosa Etta Warbington first married Fleming L. Rawson, he died sometime before 1880. The 1880 Census listing for them looks awful, but she and her children are living with her mother Martha. Rosa Etta next married my great grandfather James Monroe Harper abt. 1886. I have not located a marriage record for them yet. James Monroe first married Frances Warbington in Lauderdale County, Mississippi, 8/22/1880. Rosa and James had six children. I would be happy to send you a descendant list. I am fairly new at this, but will be glad to share all that I know. Would you prefer I send my information to you as an attachment or in email? Talk to you soon, Donna"

"I am interested in the Warbington families who moved from Alabama to Mississippi to Arkansas. For years I have been trying to connect my great grandmother Nancy A. to her parents. After searching the information at the Warbington website and connecting that information with personal information given to me from my Aunt Hazel Avant Sanders who lives in Yazoo City, Mississippi, I believe that Nancy A. might have been the daughter of John M. Warbington and Sarah Kelley. Since the John M. family was not found in the 1850 census even though they moved to Choctaw County, Mississippi in the 1840s (according to information in the website), I would like to find some other way to prove the connection. I could not find my great grandmother in the 1850 census either.

My great grandmother was born in November 1841 and died in Richland Parish, Louisiana, on 20 May 1929. She married Josiah Avant, my great grandfather, in 1869. There was a Nancy A. Warbington who married James Drew in 1859 in Lauderdale County, Mississippi, but I do not know if the Nancy A. who married James Drew was the same Nancy A. who married Josiah Avant. If I could prove or disprove this connection, it would be helpful. John M.'s family was in Lauderdale County in 1860, so the Nancy A. who married James Drew could have been part of that family...."

She first married James Drew, son of James [Joseph] Drew & Eliza ________, 1859 in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. Born abt 1839-1840 in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. James was listed as an eleven year old in his parents' household (#294-301) in Lauderdale County, Mississippi on 28 Aug 1850.

Nancy A. Worbington married James Drew in Lauderdale County, Mississippi in 1859, before her father's 1860 census was taken. Who knows what happened to James Drew? It was not until 1869 that Nancy A. married Josiah Avant. The Drew family lived in the same vicinity with the Warbingtons in Lauderdale County.

James Drew, Sgt., 37th Mississippi Infantry, Company I

The 37th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, was organized during the spring of 1862 with men recruited in the counties of Clarke, Lowndes, Greene, De Soto, Jasper, and Claiborne. After participating in numerous battles in Mississippi the unit was assigned to General Hebert's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It was captured when Vicksburg fell and during the siege it lost 17 killed, 56 wounded, and 7 missing. Exchanged, the regiment contained 26 officers and 442 men in December, 1863. It then served under Generals Mackall, Cantey, and Featherston in the Army of Tennessee. The 37th fought in the Atlanta Campaign, endured Hood's winter operations in Tennessee, and ended the war in North Carolina. It reported 5 killed and 27 wounded of the 453 engaged at Iuka, had 19 killed and 62 wounded at Corinth, and sustained 81 casualties at Hatchie's Bridge. Many were disabled in Tennessee, and early in 1865 its ten companies were reduced to three and the unit was redesignated the 37th Battalion. It surrendered in April. The field officers were Colonels Orlando S. Holland and Robert McLain; Lieutenant Colonels William S. Patton, Samuel H. Terral, and William W. Wier; and Major John McGee.

She second married Josiah Avant, son of Joseph Avant & Mary _______, 1869. Born 1849 in Alabama.

"Hugh: Unfortunately, Charles Avant of Louisiana died on the 18th of April 2002 in ICU after triple bypass surgery. However, your father's brother, Charles Avant, and I should be able to help you with your direct Avant line. Your grandfather, Joe Tom Avant, and my mother, Lillie Delilah Avant Haggard, were brother/sister. In addition, there is an Avant research group which is currently working on finding the ancestry of Peter Avant or Avants, the father of Joseph Avant, who was the father of Josiah Avant, who was the father of Benjamin Franklin Avant, my grandfather and your great grandfather. John F. Wablington, white male b. 1847

John served in the Confederate Army with Company "C," 48th Mississippi Regiment, "C" Division from 1863-1865. Although John was listed as twelve years old in 1860, making his birth year in 1848, on his pension records he stated his birth date as 19 May 1844. He first applied for his pension in Drew County, Arkansas June 28, 1921. He stated he could not perform manual labor because of "old age and bad eyes." His witnesses were A. T. W. Holdroft and J. M. Kelmas, who had known him for fifty-seven years. Later, on February 17, 1932, he completed a questionnaire neccessary to remain on the Confederate Pension Roll. ".....Found the following in the 1910 United States Federal Census through www.ancestry.com:

James Wablington Twp 17 Range 12, Oktibbeha, MS 1888 Mississippi White Male

J W Wablington 4-Beat, Sunflower, MS 1881 Mississippi White Male

John F Wablington Collins Twp, Drew, AR 1847 Mississippi White Male

Even though this name appears to be Wablington, do you think that this name really is Warbington?

The James Wablington listed above was living next door to my grandfather's brother, John H. Avant. What ties this whole thing together is that John F. was listed in Drew County, Arkansas, and we know that there was a John F. Warbington who went to Drew County, Arkansas, but who spelled his name Worbington.

In the same census, my great grandmother Nancy Ann, whose maiden name I believe was Warbington, was living in the home of my grandfather, listed in the 1910 census of Oktibbeha County as Ben A. Avants although his name was Benjamin Franklin Avant, sometimes spelled Avants.

By the way, the three names listed are the only "Wablington" names in the 1910 census according to ancestry, which gives a clue that "Wablington" is not the correct spelling. Jewel"
